A retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr. Abiodun Asabi, has highlighted a major challenge facing the Nigeria Police Force: inadequate support, particularly in terms of funding. Asabi, a former Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, called on the Federal Government and other stakeholders to provide more financial assistance to help the police reduce criminal activity across the country.
Asabi made this statement during his retirement and pull-out parade at Gani Fawehinmi Arcade in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Monday. He emphasized the need for Nigerians to show greater support for the police in order to tackle the rising insecurity.
“With my experience in the Nigeria Police, my observation is that people need to support the police much more than they are doing now,” he said. “There are a lot of benefits in collective efforts with the police. All stakeholders who are concerned about the nation’s security should rally together to support the force. This will help the police do better and move the country forward.”
Reflecting on his 35 years of service, Asabi expressed pride in his role, saying that serving Nigeria was a rewarding experience. He also encouraged current police officers to uphold the values of integrity, professionalism, and transparency in their duties while steering clear of corruption, which he warned could undermine the force.
The event was attended by several colleagues and dignitaries, who praised Asabi for his dedication, integrity, leadership, and contributions to crime prevention and police welfare. Many described him as an exemplary officer whose legacy would continue to inspire future generations of police officers.
Asabi was born on April 16, 1965, in Lagos, and is from Gbongan in the Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State. He joined the Nigeria Police Force as a cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on March 3, 1990.
