A Russian drone strike killed a family of three in southern Ukraine, causing outrage in Kyiv just 48 hours before both nations are set to hold talks with the United States on halting the ongoing war.
Negotiations will take place in Saudi Arabia on Monday, with the Ukrainian delegation hoping to secure at least a partial ceasefire to end air and naval assaults. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected a full ceasefire proposal, instead offering a halt on attacks targeting energy infrastructure and ordering his army to follow this directive.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported a new wave of attacks, with 179 drones launched at Ukraine overnight. In Zaporizhzhia, a southern city, a drone struck a family’s home late on Friday, killing a father, mother, and their teenage daughter. The local governor, Ivan Fedorov, shared details on Telegram, confirming the mother’s death after a prolonged battle to save her life.
An AFP photographer at the scene witnessed rescue workers searching through the wreckage, while smoke and fog lingered over the city. President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, condemned the attack, stating it violated the ceasefire and caused the death of a 14-year-old girl.
The strikes also left 12 others wounded, including a nine-month-old baby. Ukraine retaliated with drone strikes of its own overnight.
