The South African Presidency has expressed regret over the United States’ decision to expel Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool, urging both nations to maintain diplomatic decorum. The expulsion follows statements made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who criticized Rasool as a “race-baiting politician” and accused him of harboring hostility toward former President Donald Trump.

The statement from the Presidency emphasized, “The Presidency has noted the regrettable expulsion of South Africa’s Ambassador to the United States of America, Mr. Ebrahim Rasool.” It called for all stakeholders to uphold diplomatic standards in handling the situation, reiterating South Africa’s commitment to fostering a positive and beneficial relationship with the U.S.

Rasool, a former anti-apartheid campaigner, has been at the center of growing tensions between Washington and Pretoria. The U.S. relationship with South Africa soured earlier this year after President Trump froze aid to the country, citing a law he claims facilitates the seizure of land from white farmers. Trump further escalated tensions by inviting South African farmers to the U.S. amidst the ongoing land dispute.

The diplomatic rift continues to simmer as both countries navigate complex political and economic issues.
