A tragic boat accident occurred off Indonesia’s Bali island on Friday, as a vessel carrying 16 people capsized in rough waters. An Australian woman lost her life, and at least one other person was injured, authorities reported on Saturday.

The Sea Dragon 2 boat was en route to Nusa Penida, a popular tourist island near Bali, when it was struck by large waves. According to Bali’s police chief, Ida Bagus Putra Sumerta, 11 of the passengers were Australian tourists. A nearby boat rescued all the passengers.

Two individuals, including one tourist who was pronounced dead, were rushed to a hospital. Another person sustained a burn injury and received treatment. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that two Australians were injured and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.

Indonesia, an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, regularly faces marine accidents, often due to insufficient safety measures. In 2018, more than 150 people died when a ferry sank in one of Sumatra’s deepest lakes.
