A group of 11 Russians, detained in Tunisia last November on suspicion of terrorism, has been released and is set to return home, according to Russian state media on Friday.

The individuals were arrested near Tunisia’s border with Algeria. Initially described as tourists by Russian media, their belongings were seized by Tunisian authorities, who claimed the items didn’t align with their stated purpose of visiting as tourists. Russia’s embassy in Tunis had previously confirmed these details.

While they were held under suspicion of involvement in terrorism, no formal charges were filed. Both the Russian and Tunisian governments have kept further information on the case confidential.

As reported by Russia’s TASS news agency, the group was expected to depart Tunisia on Friday, with two flights arranged by the Russian embassy for their return.

The group had traveled to Tunisia to explore Roman ruins in Haidra, a historic site near the Algerian border. Though Haidra is a popular destination for Russians, especially following the travel restrictions linked to Moscow’s military actions in Ukraine, it is not a conventional tourist hotspot.

Tunisia remains a popular and affordable destination for Russians, with the added advantage of visa-free travel.
