Early Sunday morning, the US Secret Service shot a man after an armed confrontation near the White House. The incident occurred just minutes from the iconic building, causing immediate alarm as law enforcement officials responded to what appeared to be a potential threat.
The confrontation took place near the intersection of 17th Street and F Street NW, roughly a five-minute walk from the White House. Earlier reports from DC police indicated that the suspect, believed to be a “suicidal individual,” may have been traveling from Indiana, prompting authorities to track down his vehicle.
The car was located near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is situated adjacent to the White House. According to Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, when officers approached the vehicle, the suspect “brandished a firearm, and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel.”
Guglielmi confirmed that no injuries were sustained by any Secret Service agents.
The suspect was taken to the hospital following the shooting, but his condition remains unclear. The Secret Service has confirmed that the status of the individual is still unknown.
The incident took place over the weekend while President Biden was not at the White House. He is currently staying at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
The Secret Service is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the altercation.
