United States Vice President JD Vance addressed the 2025 National Catholic Prayer Breakfast on Friday, focusing on the persecution of Christians, particularly in Nigeria. He highlighted the resilience of Nigerian priests who continue to protect their congregations despite the severe challenges they face.

Vance praised the Trump administration’s commitment to defending religious freedom globally, citing it as a core aspect of President Trump’s policy. He stated, “One of the most important aspects of President Trump’s policy, and where I think it aligns most with Christian social teaching and Catholic values, is his pursuit of peace.” Vance emphasized the role of foreign policy in enabling or hindering people worldwide in practicing their faith, noting that Christian persecution is one of the most widespread forms of religious intolerance today.

The Vice President reflected on the example of Nigerian priests facing incredible persecution while trying to protect their flocks, highlighting the Trump administration’s priority in safeguarding religious liberty both domestically and internationally, with particular focus on vulnerable communities such as those in Nigeria.

Vance assured the audience that the Trump administration would continue supporting persecuted religious groups, particularly Christians facing violence and oppression. “Christians remain one of the most persecuted groups worldwide, and the Trump administration pledges to be the strongest defender of religious freedom and conscience rights, both at home and abroad,” Vance added.
