Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized the importance of women’s economic integration in achieving sustainable development in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 2025 Gender Inclusion Conference in Abuja, Shettima described women’s economic empowerment as the cornerstone of sustainable development.
“We cannot build Nigeria or Africa we envision without fully integrating women into our economic systems,” he said. “Women are not just participants in the economy, but leaders, innovators, and the bedrock of sustainable development.”
The conference marked the launch of Project SheIsIncluded, a initiative aimed at bridging gender gaps in finance and the broader economy. The project is built on four key pillars: education and financial literacy, maternal healthcare, gender-sensitive policies and programmes, and expanded economic opportunities for women.
Shettima urged stakeholders to take decisive action to ensure that women’s economic empowerment is treated as a critical national priority.
The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Dr. Amina Mohammed, also spoke at the conference, noting that gender equality and inclusion are not just aspirations, but foundations for sustainable development, peace, and progress worldwide.
Several state governors, including Kaduna’s Uba Sani, Jigawa’s Umar Namadi, and Edo’s Monday Okpebholo, attended the conference and pledged their commitment to women’s empowerment and economic inclusion.
Private sector stakeholders also reaffirmed their support for the initiative, with the Chairman of the Body of Banks’ CEOs and GMD/CEO of UBA Group, Mr. Oliver Alawuba, commending the Vice President’s Office for organizing the conference.
The conference was attended by various stakeholders, including government officials, private sector leaders, and civil society organizations.
The SheIsIncluded Project is expected to reach all 774 local government areas across Nigeria, ensuring that no woman is left behind in the country’s economic development.
