Gynaecologists have assured that women who undergo surgical repair for Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) can have a normal and pleasurable sexual life. However, they advised waiting 12 weeks after surgery for complete healing and recovery.
Prof. Abubakar Panti emphasized the importance of counselling and psychotherapy before resuming sexual activity to overcome fear, anxiety, and emotional trauma. He also advised women to focus on overall wellness, eating well, and preventing urinary tract infections.
Another expert, Prof. Christopher Aimakhu, confirmed that sex after repair is possible, depending on the delay in surgery and scarring. He also emphasized that women who have undergone VVF repair can have children, but delivery must be through caesarean section to prevent recurrence.
Panti stated that with successful surgery, proper healing, and emotional support, many women regained a satisfying sexual life. He advised the women to consult their gynaecologist whenever they had concerns or difficulties.
The experts urged women with VVF to seek medical attention, emphasizing that timely treatment can significantly improve their quality of life and enable them to regain normal sexual function.
